Waste
information, location, food waste amount
The population of Bangkok is 8.25 million, and the total population is
around 10 million including floating population as per the latest demographics.
According to related research results, average waste quantity produced per
capita is about 0.95~1.0kg/d, and a total number of 8900t waste is collected in whole city
every day in the year of 2009. With a constantly growing population, the total
volume of municipal waste will be 13,835t/d in 2015 by a reasonable assumption
according to researches.
Presently, municipal waste is collected and transported to three of MSW
Disposal Yards, Onnut, Nong Kheam, and Sai Mai.
At Onnut MSW Disposal Yard, the daily quantity of waste disposed is
2200t, one-third of them is treated by biocomposting measure, and the rest is
transported to Panomsarakam, Chacheongsao to landfill.
At Nongkam MSW Disposal Yard receives 3500t/d of waste, and then the
waste is transported and landfilled into Kampangsan, Nakornprathom.
The daily received waste at Sai Mai MSW Disposal Yard is 2000t/d, and
the waste is transferred to Kampangsan to landfill, Nakornprathom.
Now Onnut disposal yard is the only place that have a fresh food waste composting. Bangkok government gives the concession to Pui BKK to compost food waste to fertilizer, which has daily maximum capacity 1,000 tons. From daily fresh food waste in Bangkok, there is 1,200 tons left and it goes to landfill which has many dis advantages such as pollute water, air, soil or attract animals and insects that causes illness and diseases.
From the problem above, 2,916 tons of food waste in Bangkok still left unutilized ever day. Entrepreneurs could see this problem as the opportunity of investing in converting food waste to valuable products.
